Roles & Duties

  • Take the lead in formulating and executing litigation strategies for both active and pending cases at the trial, appellate, and Supreme Court levels, ensuring alignment with the organization’s legal objectives.
  • Oversee and manage complex legal disputes at the state level, including taking charge of bench trials and working closely with trial teams to deliver successful outcomes.
  • Direct the presentation of evidence, develop strategic deposition approaches, and manage witness questioning, ensuring the most effective presentation of facts in court.
  • Draft and execute detailed written discovery requests to uncover essential case facts, develop robust legal arguments, and identify key evidence to support litigation strategies.
  • Provide thorough legal analysis and actionable policy recommendations on proposed legislation, influencing decision-making processes that support the organization’s legal and advocacy goals.
  • Draft, propose, and advocate for amendments to pending legislative language, working to shape policies that align with the organization’s values and mission.
  • Respond to complex legal inquiries from the public, policymakers, and media, providing clear, legally sound, and consistent answers to protect and promote the organization’s legal interests.
  • Draft and review high-quality, public-facing legal content, including opinion editorials, briefs, analysis pieces, and other materials that clearly communicate legal perspectives to diverse audiences.
  • Review, edit, and ensure the quality of legal work produced by senior and junior legal staff, providing guidance and mentorship to ensure compliance with the highest legal standards.
  • Collaborate effectively with executive leadership and advocacy teams, ensuring that legal strategies support the organization’s broader mission, objectives, and legal priorities.

Job Requirements

  • On-site presence required in Sacramento, California, to engage directly with the team and stakeholders in a fast-paced, mission-driven environment.
  • A deep commitment to a values-driven, conservative legal mission, with the ability to align legal strategies with the organization’s overarching goals and objectives.
  • Proven experience managing high-profile, politically sensitive cases, with the ability to navigate the complexities of legal and public opinion dynamics.
  • Ability to maintain accuracy, professionalism, and composure under pressure, particularly when handling urgent or complex legal matters that impact the organization’s objectives.
  • Strong collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively across functional teams, including leadership, advocacy, and communications, to drive cohesive legal strategies.

Qualifications

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school and active membership in the California State Bar (required).
  • Extensive experience in civil litigation, including a strong background in state appellate practice and the handling of complex legal cases.
  • Proficiency in courtroom procedures, evidence handling, and discovery, with an ability to lead trial teams in all aspects of case management.
  • Deep understanding of the legislative process, with hands-on experience in policy advising and actively participating in shaping legal frameworks.
  • Exceptional legal writing skills, with the ability to communicate legal concepts clearly, concisely, and persuasively in both written and verbal formats.
  • Proven leadership experience managing litigation teams or legal departments, including overseeing strategic initiatives, guiding legal staff, and ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
  • Strong ability to work independently, prioritize tasks effectively, and meet deadlines, ensuring all legal matters are handled in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Comfortable and adaptable to working in a conservative, mission-aligned nonprofit environment, with a strong understanding of the organizational culture and values.

Compensation and Benefits:

$150,000 – $200,000 (commensurate with experience). Benefits:100% employer-paid health, dental, and vision insurance; free parking; generous paid vacation package; additional competitive benefits

Schedule:

The Legal Affairs Director will be expected to work full-time and may include occasional travel as needed.
